Travel Tips for Healthy Back
Posted on 2010-05-10 22:47:26
For those of you who are traveling now or soon, or know someone doing the same, here are a few simple ways to make the trip less painful.
1: move frequently, especially your lower back. Put a pillow or lumbar
support behind the low back.
2: squeeze a pillow or
your two balled up fists between your knees, then as you continue to
squeeze gently, slide them towards your hips about two or three inches.
Repeat a few times. Remember to sit upright when you do this one, with
a healthy curve in your low back. (this works as long as you are NOT the driver. Be sure to pull over before doing this one!)
3: sit tall, with low back arched as above, then gently pull your
shoulders back as if to pinch a golf ball between your shoulder blades.
Hold for 20 or 30 seconds; repeat a few times. Keep chin in and back.
That's it. Should be self explanatory. If not, pls contact me and I
will see about doing a quick video on it to post.
Feel free to share this with anybody you know going on a long trip.

hip pain solved !
Posted on 2010-05-04 20:29:53
Just today, I had another "miracle cure" of hip pain: "Bob" (not his real name) had come in a week ago with right hip pain. Bob runs and bikes for exercise, and like many Boulderites, goes at it HARD! He had seen just about everybody: PT, Yoga, sports medicine clinics, and the rest. He has had his hip injected twice, his IT band "released" once, and spent many hundreds of dollars on massage....still.....hip pain. UGH.
My evaluation revealed a difference in his two feet, one more rigid or stiff than the other. His pelvis was rotated, and his hip was in the wrong position to work well. But, when I told him I was going to work on his FEET, he was upset! "That's not where the pain is, Doc!" he insisted. (as if I hadn't even been listening to him...)
Work Began: Feet / Ankles / Feet....softening and balancing both sides. Then up to the knees... again balancing both sides and releasing his proximal Tib/Fib joint.
Today Bob returned with a BIG SMILE on his face....pain is 80% gone and he is pushing his runs. "That is FANTASTIC" he urged...."why didn't anybody else see that?"
I explained that many doctors and therapists get caught up "chasing the pain" and don't take the time they need to completely examine the patient, what him or her walk or run, and prioritize the care plan for optimum results.
